Safety - Up Close And Personal

Safety is many things, but one thing it’s not is simple. There are many components to safety, and two of the most important are acquiring knowledge and knowing how best to use it.

To bring experts together to expand our knowledge, Gold Coast Neighbors has created a series of community outreach and involvement activities and programs that reaches out to the presidents of condominium and co-op boards and building managers with presentations geared to the special issues and problems of this group.

Because the most important issue we all face is safety, our November 28 presentation will focus on a discussion of fire safety in buildings and homes led by representatives from the Chicago Fire Department. The program will also include information on life-saving measures that will be addressed by spokespeople from the American Red Cross. The discussion topics will include AEDs (automated external defibrillators), CPR (cardio-pulmonary respiration), and the Heimlich maneuver.

Our presenters will look at the effectiveness in condominiums and co-ops of the AED, the portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia and treats it through the application of electricity. Also discussed, and demonstrated, will be CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. As part of the presentation, the Good Samaritan Law and its implications on the use of these three techniques will be considered.

In addition to the formal program, buildings will have the opportunity to sign up for a CPR training date.
