Welcome!

Gold Coast Neighbors Association

Our neighborhood organization has been providing a voice for the Gold Coast of Chicago since 1957. Until now, we had been the NSALSDA. We have changed our name to Gold Coast Neighbors to more clearly reflect our membership and our mission. We have 18 streets within our boundaries, we are the heart of the Gold Coast, and we are neighbors. Being a primarily all-volunteer organization, we care passionately about preserving our heritage through education, advocacy, and beautification. We invite you to learn more about your organization by exploring our website.

Goudy Square Park
Gold Coast Neighbors continues to work in conjunction with Alderman Daley and the City of Chicago to beautify the parkways around this beloved neighborhood gathering place. Spearheaded by GCN Director Karen Herman, an association fundraising campaign raised over $25,000 for the plantings and maintenance of the parkways. GCN would like to thank Alderman Daley and Mariani Landscape for their work on the project. In 2008 eight generous donors from five buildings bordering the park pledged over $1,500 per year for the next three years to maintain the parkways.  Interested in making a contribution? Please send your donation to the association office address. Make check payable to Gold Coast Neighbors and indicate "Goudy Park Parkways" in the memo section to help defray the costs of maintenance.

Neighborhood Updates and Announcements:

•Robbery in the Gold Coast
(report from the Chicago Sun Times, Aug 11)
Two teenagers were robbed at gunpoint late Tuesday in the Gold Coast neighborhood on the Near North Side. The two victims, both 18, were walking near the intersection of East Goethe and North Stone streets at 11:25 p.m. when the robbery happened, according to Near North District police Capt. Jerome Fluder. Two men, both of whom displayed guns, approached the two and allegedly said: “Shut the f--- up or we’ll blow your heads off,’’ and ordered them to the ground. The men did not fire the guns but took two purses from the women and fled on foot east on Goethe and then south on Stone, according to Fluder. The men were both described as being 20-30, 5--foot-6 to 5-foot-7, Hispanic and wearing a “shaved hairstyle,’’ the captain said. One of the suspects was described as weighing 200-230 pounds while the other was 200-250 pounds. The heavier man was wearing a white shirt with tan shorts and the other man had a light blue t-shirt and tan khaki shorts on, according to the captain.  Both purses, "MK" and “Juicy Couture,’’ had cameras inside, and cell phones and cash were also taken. The women were not injured and the value of the items taken were $500 each, according to the captain, who said the incident was not believed to be part of a recent pattern. Belmont Area detectives are investigating.

•La Salle Drive Reconstruction Project Begins!
This long awaited project is scheduled to begin Monday July 26th.  It consists of a complete rebuild of La Salle Drive from Clark Street to Lake Shore Drive. The two pedestrian underpasses leading to Lincoln Park (one just east of Stockton and the other is half way between Clark and Lake Shore) will be rebuilt. Traffic signals will be modernized, new ornamental street light poles will be installed, medians will be planted and the parkway will be landscaped. The southbound exit ramp off of Lake Shore Drive will be reconfigured. The intersection of Inner Lake Shore Drive and La Salle will be rebuilt, shortening the crossing distance for pedestrians to improve safety whilemaintaining smooth traffic flow. Over 7,000 square feet of parkland will be added. Beginning on Monday July 26, the pedestrian underpass nearest Stockton will be closed for renovation. Once that underpass is complete, it will be reopened and the other will be closed so that work can begin on that one. Also beginning on Monday, one lane of traffic in each direction will be closed for the duration of the project. There will not be any full closures of La Salle during construction. This project is expected to be complete in December, 2011.
