Before Richard M. Daley was the mayor, he was the Cook County State's Attorney and 25 years ago first addressed members of the Gold Coast Neighbors. On Monday, October 15th, GCN President Maureen O'Brien and over 300 members once again welcomed now Mayor Daley to the Annual Meeting at the 3Arts building on North Dearborn.

President O'Brien, continuing GCN's 50th Anniversary Celebration, presented a check to Mayor Daley in order to plant five trees anywhere in the city he preferred. This special gift highlighted GCN's commitment to one of Mayor Daley's passion projects, encouraging "green" spaces.

Mayor Daley addressed the crowd and referenced the city's record on the environment and some significant accomplishments. He also spoke on another of his great passions, education. He mentioned the need to fight for funds for education and ended with a compliment to all in the room, "Thank you for your dedication to Chicago and to your community."

To commemorate this address by the Mayor, President O'Brien also presented him with a copy of the original GCN twenty-five year old invitation and a crystal diamond inscribed, "Thank you for keeping our city vibrant."

Mayor Daley's last act of the evening was to present long time GCN Director, Audrey Gallery, with a special recognition award. It referenced her grandfather, Admiral Gallery, and his involvement in building the North Avenue Bridge in 1907.

The Gold Coast Neighbors Association was the recipient of the AIA Award, presented by Laura Fisher.
