President Maureen O'Brien conducted a very informative meeting at Maxim's. Over 100 members and neighbors gathered to hear the update.
Honored guests included State Senator John Cullerton, and Alderman Vi Daley as well as Alderman Burt Natarus. Senator Cullerton, the keynote speaker, discussed a Bill he introduced to protect citizens in matters relating to identity theft that provides access to your credit report so you can ensure no one has invaded your credit. The Bill becomes effective January 2007. He also addressed financial issues, stating that although the Budget was tight, taxes were not raised. One of the strategies to be discussed in 07 is leasing the tollways to raise $24 billion in revenue.
Alderman Daley discussed a number of neighborhood enhancements, including newly painted light poles throughout the neighborhood and traffic controls in high risk areas such as Goudy Park. Speed bumps were dicussed as a second alternative because they can cause problems if overused.
Brian Imus, with the Illinois Public Interest Research Group gave a presentation on the features of the Identity Theft measures now in place for consumer protection and several public health/safety issues.
Alderman Natarus acknowledged the new 18th District Commander, Bob Evans, who is doing a very good job. Noise abatement ordinances are being enfored more rigoroursly. He discussed alternative plans under consideration for the 3 Arts Building, which include possibly a branch library or a museum. He also mentioned rebuilding Ogden School as a new 8th grade school.
Certificates of Appreciation for Outstanding Contributions to the Gold Coast Neighbors Association were presented to Susan Matyus, Larry Gard, Cindy Bromelmeier, Karen Kammer, Mario Stefanini, Chris Ryan, and Gay Leffel.
This year's President's Award was given to Tom Gariti, the Chairman of Evening on Astor for the past 3 years. |
